OpLove Session {“G” Family Homecoming}

This afternoon I had the honor of photographing an OpLove homecoming session for the “G” family. We started our afternoon patiently waiting for the arrival of the sub along with hundreds of eager families, most of whom hadn’t seen their loved one for 6 months. Then excitement grew, as we watched the sub be directed into port by the tug boats. And finally the moment everyone was waiting for arrived, the soldiers began disembarking from the sub and everyone raced down the pier searching for their loved ones. It was amazing seeing the sheer joy, relief and excitement on all of their faces. I feel blessed to have witnessed such a wonderful occasion. Thank you “G” family, for choosing me to document your special day! Here’s a sneak peek for now. Enjoy!

Mine on Monday {4/12/10}

Good Monday morning to you all. Hope you all enjoyed the weekend, we did. Lots of yard projects accomplished, which is always a good thing. One of the yard projects that got accomplished this weekend was Scott installing a mini 3 hole putting green in the backyard. Anyway, here are some pictures I took of my little guy and his newest passion – golf. He uses this putter that Scott cut down for him, golf balls and a bucket or whatever else he can use for a hole. It’s so cute! Also, I wanted to give a BIG congrats to Phil Mickelson, great job at the Masters! And a little warning, looks like you might just have some competition soon! LOL! Have a great day everyone!

Meet Rachel {Senior Rep Class 2011}

This morning I had a fun mini session with my senior rep – Rachel. We had a quick session to create some images for her rep cards and my 2011 senior advertising campaign. I have to say she braved the cold & wind and was a total trooper. Thanks Rachel, we got some great images. Looking forward to your full session this summer. Here’s a sneak peek for now. Enjoy!

Fashion Friday {Spring Outfit Ideas}

Happy Friday all! Spring is finally upon us…HOORAY! The arrival of spring, also brings the beginning of my busy season. My April calendar is full. May has two spots left and I am currently booking June & July. With that in mind, I thought it would be helpful to post some spring outfit ideas to help you plan your clothing for your upcoming session. In the past, I’ve posted ideas from the Gap & Old Navy etc… Today I chose all the outfits and shoes from Target. I thought it would be helpful to show you don’t have to spend a lot to look great! Enjoy!

P.S. If you still have questions about clothing ideas for your upcoming session, please feel free to email or call me.

What’s that Wednesday {shutter speed}

What’s that Wednesday today is focusing on shutter speeds. As I mentioned in my previous post in order to use your DSLR to it’s full advantage you really need to shoot in manual mode. And in order to do that you must understand how to get proper exposure of your images. Last week we talked about aperture and how it relates to exposure. So now that you understand that, we can talk about shutter speed.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say on the subject:
In still cameras, the term shutter speed represents the time that the shutter remains open when taking a photograph.

In addition to its effect on exposure, the shutter speed changes the way movement appears in the picture. Very short shutter speeds can be used to freeze fast-moving subjects, for example at sporting events. Very long shutter speeds are used to intentionally blur a moving subject for artistic effect.[1] Short exposure times are sometimes called “fast”, and long exposure times “slow”.

A couple side notes, when you are controlling your shutter speed manually you will need to decrease your shutter speed to increase your exposure time. I know backwards again, right? Basically a shutter speed of 1/60 will leave the camera aperture open for 1/60th of a second and so on and so on. Confused? Try messing around with your settings and you’ll see what I mean.

The other thing, like mentioned above is when you are controlling your shutter speeds you can essentially freeze motion or intentionally blur motion. (So if you are chasing toddlers, raise those shutter speeds or they will look like great big blurry messes! LOL!) Also note until you get good at hand holding a very heavy camera and lens, (depending on your combo of choice) you shouldn’t try and hand hold low shutters speeds. If you find you absolutely must use a low shutter speed you should use a tripod. A good rule of thumb, is your shutter speed should be at least double the length of your lens. (i.e. if you are shooting with a 50mm lens your shutter speed should be at least 1/100)

Hopefully I haven’t left your head spinning too much! LOL! My goal is just to try and teach you some basics so you can use your camera in manual mode. Like I mentioned before, go ahead and try things out. Try changing you shutter speed and aperture and see what you get for results. The more you practice the more it will start to make sense. At least, that’s how it worked for me. But then I am totally a hands on learner. Next week we will talk about ISO and it’s effect on exposure So stay tuned!

Mine on Monday {4/5/10}

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a lovely Easter weekend. We really enjoyed the weekend. The kids loved every minute of Easter. Emma was so into it this year. She made all kinds of projects and everything. It was really great, seeing the holiday through her eyes. Anyway, over the weekend we also took a cool family photo. Growing up, my mom was a big Norman Rockwell fan. We had his artwork all over the walls. So I had an idea sometime last week that it would be fun to recreate his “Sunday Morning” print using our family and a modern twist. Here’s what we came up with. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

The V Family

This afternoon I had the pleasure of photographing the beautiful “V” family again. You probably remember them form their maternity and Miss. E’s newborn shots. I really enjoy doing repeat sessions for families. Especially during the first year of life, it just goes by so fast! I mean seriously, it seems like just last week I was shooting their maternity photos and now Miss. E is 4 months old! Can you believe it? I do encourage all my maternity and newborn clients to consider booking my first year plan. You can click here for more details. Anyway, it was so exciting to have my first outdoor session of 2010! Spring is finally here! So thanks guys for a great afternoon, enjoy your sneak peek.
